07 - Jul 2013 - Sophisticated Small Satellites from Surrey
The Tea Bar
The speaker for the July meeting at The Tea Bar will be Dr Stuart Eves who is Lead Mission Concepts Engineer, (or “ideas guy”), at Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in Guildford.

He will be giving us a light hearted look at past, current, and future missions using small satellites, with an emphasis on activities at SSTL. The talk will highlight the wide variety of uses to which our increasingly complex satellites are now being applied by customers around the globe. There will be a focus (pun intended!) on observational missions involving telescopes; looking both down at the Earth and also up at the heavens. The talk will conclude with a vision of how constellations of small satellites will change the ways in which we use space in the future.

Bio: The highlight of Stuart’s career to date was the initiation of the TopSat imaging satellite programme, which established a new world record for “resolution per mass of satellite”. Indeed, the mission was so successful that while the actual hardware was operating in orbit, the engineering model of the satellite formed part of the space gallery at the Science Museum in London.

Stuart has an MSc in Astrophysics, a PhD in constellation design, and has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society for more than 20 years.

This talk is part of a lead in to World Space Week which runs from 4 to 10 October 2013. World Space Week in the UK is being co-ordinated by the British Inter-Planetary Society. More details can be found at:

The Tea Bar will be open for at least half an hour before the talk which starts at 7.30pm, so you can get yourself a drink and have a chat with other participants. The discussions will aim to finish around 9.00pm, though everyone will be welcome to stay around and have a chat with the speaker afterwards ... and indulge in more of the Tea Bar's delicious cakes.

The format of the evening is usually a talk of 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a short break so the audience can refill their glasses, before questions and discussions about the talk. Entry is free and open to everyone, but we do encourage you to buy a tea, coffee or drink (and cakes) at the bar to show your support for The Tea Bar who sponsor the meeting by providing the venue.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore and debate the latest ideas in science and technology.
